Lithuania’s Ambassador presents his letters of credence to the Italian President
On 8 September, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Lithuania to Italy Ričardas Šlepavičius presented his letters of credence to the President of the Italian Republic Sergio Mattarella.
On behalf of the President of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė, the Ambassador Šlepavičius told the President of Italy that Lithuanians expected him to pay an official visit to Lithuania in 2018. “2018 will mark a centenary of the restoration of the state of Lithuania. Your visit to Lithuania will nicely illustrate the meaningful and long-lived relationship between our countries, will provide a new impetus for the development of cooperation between Lithuania and Italy, and will strengthen our economic and cultural ties,” said Šlepavičius.
Following the solemn ceremony, Lithuania’s Ambassador and the Italian President also discussed bilateral relations between Lithuania and Italy, cooperation between the two countries within the EU and NATO, and the security situation in Europe. “The role of Italian soldiers in NATO’s enhanced forward presence in the Baltic states and the engagement of the Lithuanian armed forces in the EU’s fight to counter illegal immigration in the Mediterranean provide an excellent example of solidarity among our states,” said Šlepavičius. The Ambassador welcomed the intensive cultural cooperation between the two countries and the active academic exchange of scholars and students. In addition, Šlepavičius noted that not only Lithuanian tourists were particularly fond of Italy, but also thousands of Italians visited Lithuania every year.
Lithuania’s Ambassador to Italy Ričardas Šlepavičius also serves as the Ambassador to Malta, San Marino and the Permanent Representative to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.
