For the first time, Russia fails to be elected to the Executive Council of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, and Lithuania wins a seat

Today, on 29 November, at the annual Conference of the States Parties to the Chemical Weapons Convention, elections were held for the Executive Council of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) for the period 2024-2026. For the first time in history, Russia was excluded from the Executive Council, with the majority voting for Lithuania, Poland and Ukraine.

The result of the vote reflects a shift in the perception of the majority of OPCW countries that military aggression against another state party - Ukraine - and violations of the Chemical Weapons Convention cannot be compatible with the duties at international institutions and would cast a shadow on the credibility of the organisation.

“It is high time every international organisation cleansed itself to maintain its relevance and credibility,” the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Gabrielius Landsbergis said.

Upon becoming a member of the Executive Council, Lithuania will be able to directly and actively support the position that aligns with the interests of like-minded countries and Lithuania within this organisation. Lithuania will also consistently seek to draw the attention of the international community to the chemical weapons dumped in the Baltic and other seas, promoting cooperation and exchange of information on this issue. Lithuania’s participation in the activities of the Executive Council will contribute to strengthening the image of an active and responsible member of the international community. Lithuania was already elected to the Executive Council for the period 2020-2022.
