Representing Lithuania in FAO

Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), founded in 1945, is one of the biggest specialised organizations of the United Nations, involving 192 member states, all of which have their permanent representatives or even headquarters in Rome, representing also other international organizations, such as WFP (World Food Programme) and IFAD (International Fund for Agricultural Development).

FAO's mandate is to achieve food security, which nowadays is a serious issue, knowing the growth of human population, unequal food distribution and global warming. FAO tries to ensure access to enough high-quality food, to raise levels of nutrition, to improve agricultural productivity, to ensure food distribution, to better the lives of rural populations, to contribute to the growth of the world economy and to eliminate famine.

FAO acts as a neutral forum, or as a source of information for nations to solve problems and reach common goals. The organization helps developing countries and countries in transition to modernize and improve the practices of agriculture, forestry and fisheries, and to create national agricultural policies, legislations and strategies for development and food security. Every year FAO carries out around 2000 projects with a budget that exceeds 400 million USD.

Lithuania is a member of FAO since 1991. Up to this day FAO has contributed with more than 4,3 million euros, destined to finance 24 projects in Lithuania. In addition, libraries in Lithuania constantly receive FAO publications.
